refurb the taillights... - Original Pony Car

I need to fix my taillights before one of them falls off! Ill order the kit from LMR that has the clips and the butyl tape but last time i tried to mess wit the clips i couldnt get it to come out, anyone else ever messed with them?
also, im going to paint the insides a chrome color, do i need to prime it first?

follow up on this, pulled the lenses off and was able to pry the little clip up a touch to better how the lenses.
One side I used butyl tape, the other a heavy bead of black RTV. the tape side left a gap between the housing and the lens, the RTV side did not. the clips do most of the holding here and the rtv/tape is just to help seal. next time Ill probably use RTV around both.
The rattle can chrome paint did its job and now I have nice bright taillights that im sure some punk kid texting while driving will not even bother to notice.
